The photogrammetric survey realised with the digital photoplanes technique, is, without any doubts, a basic and irreplaceable means for the documentation of marble tarsias decorations of the Siena Cathedral flooring. It is the first product of this kind realised for the detailed documentation of this work of art (having a so great historical and artistic value), that is in a very difficult state of preservation owing to trample wear and, for that, not entirely visible because it is covered by protection panels for a great part of the year.

The digital photoplane we realised is either a documentation of this work of art and its present status or the base for all investigations (criticism and instrumental) foreseen in the ambit of the current project.

Il rilievo fotogrammetrico realizzato attraverso la recente tecnica dei fotopiani digitali costituisce senz'altro un elaborato fondamentale ed insostituibile per la documentazione delle decorazioni a tarsia marmorea del pavimento del Duomo di Siena. Si tratta del primo elaborato di questo tipo che viene realizzato per la descrizione di quest'opera di grande valore storico-artistico, che presenta delle difficili condizioni di preservazione e conservazione per fenomeni di usura dovuti al calpestio e che, per questo motivo, rimane, a tutt'oggi, parzialmente fruibile e visibile in quanto occultata dai pannelli di protezione per gran parte dell'anno.

Si evidenzia inoltre, che il rilievo realizzato costituisce, sia un elaborato digitale di documentazione dell'opera e del suo corrente stato di degrado, sia la base operativa sulla quale potranno essere sviluppate e tematizzate tutte le altre indagini di tipo strumentale e critico che sono previste nell'ambito del progetto in corso.

For a complete documentation of this work of art, we forebode that, in the future, when the restoration activity will be terminated, other surveys of this kind can be executed, moreover we hope also that an higher scale photogrammetric survey will be programmed for a more detailed documentation of the zones of greater artistic value.

At last, we also would like to point out that, the density of information and the great value of the floor, could require other surveys, programmed during the restoration activities and according with the importance of the single areas, in order to provide a more rich and detailed documentation.

Per la completa documentazione dell'opera si auspica che nel futuro possano essere condotti altri rilievi di questo tipo per una documentazione complessiva, una volta che saranno ultimati i restauri, e per una documentazione di dettaglio, programmando rilievi fotogrammetrici a scala superiore per le zone di maggior pregio artistico.

In definitiva, si segnala che la densitŕ delle informazioni e il pregio dell'opera giustificherebbero e richiederebbero altri rilievi alfine di fornire una documentazione ancora piů ricca e piů dettagliata programmata nell'arco degli eventuali restauri ed in funzione delle singole aree.
